A man has been charged with malicious wounding after an assault that left a married father-of-two with serious head injuries.
The 40-year-old was discovered lying in Bore Street in Lichfield in the early hours of Saturday, Staffordshire Police said.
He is being treated for head and facial injuries and regained consciousness for the first time on Sunday.
A local man in his mid-20s was charged and bailed to appear before magistrates in Tamworth on 2 February.
A second man, also in his mid-20s and from the Lichfield area, was arrested in connection with the assault but released without charge.
Police said the victim had been out with friends on Friday night in several town centre pubs, including The Fountain, The Little Barrow and The George and Dragon.
