City nightlife "can cause problems"
Fears Manchester is becoming an "urban Ibiza" are to be discussed by city leaders.

The explosion of bars and pubs in the city centre has led to concerns about violence and bad behaviour.

Councillors want to hear from businesses and residents before deciding if action is needed.

The city has 550 licensed premises and Councillor Pat Karney believes the number of places should be capped.

Ms Karney, who is on the council's social strategy scrutiny committee, will chair the meeting.

'Encourage tolerance'

He said: "Manchester pioneered the concept of the 24-hour city and other cities across the UK have followed.

"But the downside is the possibility of violence and bad behaviour on the streets.

"We want a tolerant, enjoyable and busy atmosphere, which encourages everyone to visit and invest."

A panel from Greater Manchester Police, the NHS, City Life, and Pub and Club Network were due to hear evidence on the issue at a meeting at the town hall on Monday.
