A man has been charged with the murder of a jewellery shop owner shot dead during an armed raid.

Marian Bates, 64, died in Arnold, Nottingham, on 30 September last year.

Peter Charles Williams, 18 , of no fixed address, appeared before Nottingham magistrates on Saturday charged with murder, robbery and causing grievous bodily harm.

Mr Williams was not required to enter a plea and was remanded in custody.

Mr Williams was arrested on Wednesday - police said they were looking for a second man over the raid.

Mrs Bates, a grandmother, died from gunshot wounds to the chest. Her 64-year-old husband Victor and daughter Xanthe, 34, were also injured in the attack.

The killing sparked massive media coverage and 1,000 people attended a memorial service for Mrs Bates, yards from the Time Centre store where she died.

Shopkeepers in Arnold also raised over £1,000 for a reward in the bid to catch the people responsible.
