Two arrested over car death

Two men have been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident in which a college administrative assistant was killed in front of horrified students.

Father-of-two David Evans was knocked down on a zebra crossing near Shireland Language College in Smethwick on Tuesday.

On Friday West Midlands Police confirmed a 26-year-old Smethwick man and a 39-year-old man from the Cradley Heath area of Birmingham had been arrested and later bailed, pending further inquiries.

Mr Evans, from Edgbaston, Birmingham, was crossing Waterloo Road, while students were near the school entrance, when he was run over by a black five-door car which then sped off towards Bearwood.

Widow's appeal

Inspector Ron Winch, of Smethwick police, stressed no charges had been brought.

The arrests came just a day after the 55-year-old's wife Jane, who is deputy head of the college, made an appeal to help catch her husband's killer.

She said: "His death has left all of our family devastated.

"Whoever did this has deprived me and my children of a man who was very important in our lives. Our adviser, our counsellor, our refuge in times of difficulty."

She said that her husband had given up driving 20 years ago because he was "not comfortable" with cars because of the misery and trauma associated with traffic accidents.

"This is what makes his death through a hit and run accident so tragic. It represents everything he disliked," she added.
