Raping 'runs in family'
Martin Kelly

A man has been jailed for life for rape exactly one month after his brother admitted raping another woman in a separate attack.

Twenty-two year old Martin Kelly, from Rowanberry Avenue, Leicester, attacked his victim as she was making a film on the Great Central Way in the city.

The BBC has learned that his older brother Orlando Kelly, 28, has served two jail terms for attacking women and is currently on remand after admitting raping a woman in Leicester in December.

Leicester Crown Court heard Martin Kelly followed his victim after she asked him for directions on the quiet railway path.

He threatened her with a screwdriver before forcing himself on her.

Victim speaks

She told BBC East Midlands Today: "He came from behind me.

"He told me to do what he said or he would kill me.

"I really did not even know if I would survive it or not.

"You don't know how far it will go, whether he is going to kill you. It is the most awful experience."

Orlando Kelly raped an 83-year-old widow after breaking into her home 12 years ago when he was aged 16.

Like Martin, he had started taking drugs after their father committed suicide.

Yvonne Todd walked the brothers to school when they were boys and her son used to play with Orlando.

"Many people that remember Orlando wonder why, what happened, what went wrong, what made him do what he did?

"To know now that Martin has followed in his brother's footsteps is... I don't know how to come to terms with that."

The judge said while sentencing Martin that women needed to be protected from him.

His victim said: "If you can understand the pain that he has caused not only me but everyone around me. My friends, my family, it has completely disrupted my life.

"I want him to be helped. I don't want him to do this to anyone else."

Orlando Kelly is due to be sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on 13 November.
