Residents of a Cornish resort say they are outraged at proposals to open a table dancing club in what many see as a residential area.

Plans are to be submitted to planners turn the Old Vic Bar in the centre of Newquay at Chapel Hill into the resort's first such venue.

The Newcastle-based company For Your Eyes Only has similar businesses in Bournemouth and Southampton

The firm's operations director, Glenn Niche, says attitudes need to change.
I just think it's awful, it's a residential area and we should be left as we are

"We come across this all the time; their fears are probably that they just that they don't understand how we operate," he said.

"They have probably never been into a table dancing club and have only seen them on the television and that doesn't portray how we operate or what we operate, it's quite often misguided and misread information that causes most of the fears."

He says his firm takes extra steps to ensure the practice is within the law and protects public decency.

But Peter Anstey, who lives in the area, is against the plans, which are still in their early stages

Public meeting

"I think it's disgusting, I've got nothing against people at those sort of clubs but this place here is the only sanctuary for local people in Newquay.

"It's out of order, but if it was out of town then I don't see anything wrong with it, it's not my cup of tea."

Georgina Love, who lives nearby, said: "I just think it's awful, it's a residential area and we should be left as we are."

The Newquay Action Group plans to hold a public meeting at on 4 February to discuss the plans and outline their objections
