Tribute to murdered policeman
A constable shot and killed by an armed robber is to have a room at a police station dedicated to his memory.

Gavin Carlton, 29, was murdered as he sat in his patrol car in Coventry on 19 December 1988.

He was attacked in Torrington Avenue after following two men who had raided the Tile Hill branch of the Midland Bank in Coventry, on 19 December, 1988.

Pc Carlton's life is to be remembered by a room named after him at Chace Avenue police station in Coventry.

Gunman's suicide

Several police officers were also fired upon after coming to their colleague's aid.

One received serious injuries after being shot in the stomach.

The gunman died after turned the weapon on himself. His accomplice was arrested and given a jail term.

Acting Inspector Kerry Blakeman said: "Members of Gavin's family and many of his previous colleagues, together with a number of officers from Chace Avenue, will attend.

'Highest price'

"Gavin received a posthumous Queen's Award for Bravery as a result of this incident, and this award will be displayed in the entrance of the room along with a plaque."

Chief Superintendent Chris Duffield, from Chace Avenue police station, said: "For his love of policing and his desire to protect communities, Gavin paid the highest price."

The dedication service will be conducted by the force chaplain Reverend Bill Hopley.

The Gavin Carlton Room will officially open at midday on Tuesday 27 January.
