EU steps in over development
The European Parliament has intervened in plans for a housing development in Leicestershire.

It has written to the Government to raise concern about the degree of pollution that could be created in Syston.

Under the proposals, 340 homes would be built around Barkby Road.

Residents say the scale of the project would put too much pressure on already congested roads.

'Minimal impact'

At a Charnwood Borough Council meeting earlier this month, initial approval was given to the plans.

But now the EU has considered a petition drafted by opponents of the project.

It agreed there were concerns about the level of pollution that would be created and has asked the UK Government to look into the matter.

Charnwood Borough Council said an assessment concluded there would be minimal impact on air quality as a result of the development.
