Armed robbers flee empty-handed
Gunmen forced post office customers to lie on the floor in the fourth armed robbery in four days in Cambridge.

Three men carrying shotguns and an axe tried to raid the Derby Store in Newnham at 1610 GMT on Wednesday.

One robber tried to smash the security glass in the post office booth with the axe while the others made customers lie on the floor.

The gang fled empty-handed when the glass failed to break.

Changed cars

They got away in a stolen J registration silver Ford Escort which they dumped on Wilberforce Road.

Witnesses said they changed cars and made off into an old-style, blue, Vauxhall Cavalier or Astra.

The men were all wearing dark clothes, gloves and balaclavas.

Police want to speak to anyone who saw men acting suspiciously near Derby Street, or saw a car driving at speed near Wilberforce Road.

Police are not linking the latest raid to the three earlier robberies on off-licences and a security van which are believed to have been committed by the same man.
