Student critical after pub attack

A student is critically ill in hospital with after being attacked outside a south Wales public house.

The 21-year-old man was found unconscious in the early hours of Christmas Day outside the Rickard's Inn pub in Park Street, Treforest, near Pontypridd.

The student, from the Midlands and who studies at the University of Glamorgan, has received serious head injuries.

He is being treated at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Christopher said that on Christmas Eve the man was involved in an "altercation inside the premises and was later found unconscious in the street outside."

The man's parents travelled down to be with him at the hospital's intensive care unit.

An incident room has been set up to investigate the attack and South Wales Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them on 01443 485351.
