Queen 'right to highlight helpers'
David Foster
David Foster helps run youth football teams in County Durham
A County Durham man who was featured in the Queen's Christmas message, says she was right to highlight the work of volunteer groups.

David Foster helps run football teams and youth clubs in the county for boys and girls.

He was featured in the Queen's Christmas Day broadcast, along with four other volunteers from around the UK.

Mr Foster is secretary of Ferryhill Town Youth football team.

He praised the work of other volunteers who he said "keep groups like ours alive".

Expanded club

He added: "The Queen was right to highlight the importance of volunteers in her Christmas message.

"To help others without looking for a reward is part of the Christmas spirit.

"The club was formed in 1994 by myself and friend Stephen Hopper.

"In 1999 we were to change our name once more into Ferryhill Town Youth after introducing girls into the club.

"When we first formed we were one of three junior football clubs in Ferryhill, until the other two unfortunately folded and we ended up being the only junior club.

"So that meant either let the other children run the streets or expand the club."

Mr Foster's wife Rita currently handles most of the cub's activities following a bout of ill health, which required him needing hospital treatment.

The Ferryhill club was among a number to receive The Queen's Awards for Voluntary Service in 2003.
