New name for city museum
A museum in Derby is changing its name from the beginning of 2004.

The Museum of Industry and History is being renamed the Silk Museum to integrate it better with the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

The heritage site, which runs for 15 miles along the Derwent River, includes the Masson Mills at Matlock Bath and the Cromford Mills at Cromford in Derbyshire.

Derby City Council says there will be a transition period, probably lasting at least a year, to allow people to get used to the Derby museum's new name.

The museum will continue to display and study collections predominantly based on Derbyshire industries.

Councillor Paul West said: "We think that this new name reflects the work of the museum... in a much more positive way."
