Many cases of domestic violence go unreported
Victims of domestic violence in West Yorkshire over the festive period are being urged not to suffer in silence.

West Yorkshire Police say the festive season can be a catalyst for problems and are warning that they take domestic violence incidents very seriously.

Sergeant Jill Latham, who is the force's vulnerable victim co-ordinator, said: "The victim's safety and welfare are the police's first consideration.

"We will intervene to ensure that victims and dependents are not subjected to repeated victimisation."

She advised anyone who has been attacked at home to contact the police or local support agencies such as Women's Aid.

Sergeant Latham added that the number of cases of domestic violence reported in West Yorkshire has increased by 16% in the past year. But it is known that many incidents go unreported.
