Police to patrol hospital
Police officers will be stationed at Sheffield's accident and emergency unit on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

This is to enable them to quickly follow up complaints of assault from people who have been taken to the Northern General Hospital for treatment.

It is also hoped that what South Yorkshire Police are calling "Operation Night Nurse" will act as a deterrent to drunk and rowdy patients who may cause problems for hospital staff.

Chief Superintendent Stuart Chapman says the initiative will enable other officers to stay on their beat and not have to make trips to the Northern General to follow up complaints.

"This will ensure we can assist the hospital in making the accident and emergency department somewhere safe and free from anti-social behaviour for both staff and patients," he added.
