Girl, 10, dies in road tragedy

A 10-year-old girl died in a road accident on Tyneside, police have said.

Eleanne Oversby died in hospital after the accident in Gateshead on Monday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said incident happened at 1315 GMT on Monday at Saltwell Road in Gateshead.

The youngster, who lived in the same street, is believed to have run out from behind a parked car, into the path of a van.

The police spokeswoman added: "Eleanne was taken to Newcastle General Hospital where she later died.

"We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed what happened."

In a statement, released through Northumbria police, the girl's family said: "We are distraught about what has happened.

"This has been particularly distressing coming so close to Christmas.

"The family are all together at this time."
