Fire warning over Christmas

The brigade says householders should check their smoke alarms
Somerset Fire Brigade is warning householders to be extra careful over the festive period.

The brigade says people are more likely to die in a house fire at this time of year than at any other time.

A spokesman said: "We spend more time at home, we're relaxed and happy and our defences are down.

"Fairy lights, candles, even enjoying a glass of wine with a cigarette can be potential fire hazards."

Fire safety precautions include:

  • Do not leave fairy lights switched on when you go out or go to bed, overload plug sockets or leave candles unattended

  • Put candles in proper holders so they cannot fall over

  • Keep Christmas decorations, cards and wrapping paper away from candles, open fires and heaters

  • Check smoke alarms are working and do not be tempted to use the batteries to power any Christmas presents

  • Make your plan. Get out alive
