Transport

Millions of Britons will be travelling by road and rail this Christmas. Whether their journeys will be either pleasant or punctual is an open question.

In a special Newsnight programme, we attempted to get to the bottom of why our road and rail systems are so poor, whether any of the policies currently being applied or contemplated will ever solve the problems, and what are the "blue skies" solutions that might work instead?

Libya

Getting Libya to agree to give up weapons of mass destruction was a diplomatic coup for Britain and America. But what about the country's still terrible record on human rights and democracy?

Guantanamo Bay

And amid rumours of a possible release of British prisoners from Guantanamo Bay over the Christmas period, we assessed the future for the foreign prisoners being held there.

Newsnight can be seen on BBC Two at 2230 GMT, or in Real video, either live or on demand, by clicking on the latest programme button.
