The crashed gritter lorry
The lorry rolled backwards before overturning
A road gritter driver has died after his vehicle overturned in Greater Manchester.

The man was trapped under the cab of his lorry following the accident in Saddleworth on Monday.

Emergency teams were called to Carr Lane in Diggle at about 0700 GMT.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police later closed the road, as fire crews worked to remove the gritter from the road.

Police said it was not clear how the accident happened.

'Greatly saddened'

Carr Lane and Standedge Road were both closed after the crash.

Oldham Council said it may review safety procedures for workers gritting the town's roads as a result of the death.

The Health and Safety Executive has already started an investigation.

Council chief executive Andrew Kilburn said: "We are greatly saddened by this tragic accident - it is particularly concerning at this time of year.

"We will obviously be reviewing procedures... and we will obviously be cooperating fully with the police and the health and safety officials in their investigation."
