UK officers help Guyana shooting police

A team of British police officers is due to help detectives in Guyana investigate a fatal shooting from more than 20 years ago.

Brian Spencer, who was believed to be a Guyanese national, died in the South American state in 1982 after being shot.

Last week Suffolk Police said a 41-year-old man from Woodbridge had been arrested on 10 November in connection with the death of Mr Spencer.

The unnamed man was released on police bail until 6 January 2004 while further inquiries are carried out.

On Monday night, Assistant Police Commissioner Leon Trim from Guyana, said the British police officers were expected to arrive over the weekend, but they have not yet got in contact with officials.

Initial inquiries into Mr Spencer's death were carried out by the authorities in Guyana.

Suffolk Police became involved earlier this year after receiving information about the shooting.

Officers have been working with other law enforcement agencies, including Interpol, and are treating Mr Spencer's death as murder.
