Firefighters and paramedics have resuscitated a man rescued from a flat fire on Narborough Road in Leicester.
At its height, around 30 firefighters were tackling the flames above the Golden Spice Fish Bar.
The incident began at around 1500 GMT on Monday and closed the road in both directions for several hours.
The man was taken to hospital suffering from severe smoke inhalation.
Chris Gibbins, the sub-officer at Central Station, said: "It was a difficult fire because we had to gain access to the second floor flat.
"We had a casualty report and we had to go through the first floor which had a severe fire situation.
"The man was suffering from severe smoke inhalation so I imagine his condition was serious."
