An Indian army delegation is beginning a trip to Tibet on Tuesday to visit Chinese military bases, Delhi says.
It is the first such tour since India and China fought an inconclusive border war in 1962.
No formal boundary has ever been agreed between the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet.
Correspondents say that the Chinese army's invitation to the Indian soldiers indicates a growing dialogue between the two countries.
The Indian delegation will be headed by Lieutenant-General Mohinder Singh, the commander of the army's Fourth Corps.
It bore the brunt of the 1962 fighting, and is still posted on the disputed border.
