'Violent thug' jailed after attack
A teenager who attacked a 72-year-old man, leaving him for dead, has been sentenced to seven years detention.

Lee King, 18, described by the judge at Liverpool Crown Court as a "mindlessly violent thug", attacked Tommy Preston as he made his way home from the shops in June.

The jury heard how King punched Mr Preston in the face, causing his victim to fall to the floor.

King then used both feet to jump on his head and started kicking him.

To knock Mr Preston to the ground is reprehensible but to use your foot as a weapon, is callous beyond belief

Mr Preston suffered serious head injuries and had to be placed on a life support machine.

He only left hospital a fortnight ago, and is likely to be left with long-term health problems.

King pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

'Merciless, savage and brutal'

Sentencing, Judge Denis Clark said: "Words almost fail me.

"To knock Mr Preston to the ground is reprehensible but to use your foot as a weapon, is callous beyond belief.

"You mounted a merciless, savage and brutal attack on an innocent man 54 years older than you."

Speaking after the sentence, Mr Preston's partner, Doreen Ronning said the family could now move forward with their lives.

Mr Preston has two sons, four daughters, 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
