School fire under investigation

Firefighters spent the night damping down at a Birmingham high school after fire destroyed a large part of the building.

More than 100 firefighters were needed to bring the flames under control at Dartmouth High School in Wilderness Lane, Great Barr.

More than 1,000 pupils were led to safety as teachers carried out a roll call to ensure all the classrooms were empty.

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service described the fire as "well developed and visible from some distance away".

The school's assistant head teacher, Dave Lomax, said no one had been injured.

"All the kids are safe and the staff are safe which is what matters," he told BBC WM.

"We've got a fire in the science block, we've evacuated the building and now we're looking to get all the kids home."

The school is expected to reopen on Thursday.

Investigations into the cause of the fire which is thought to have started just before mid-day on Monday, are continuing.
