Road opens after improvements
Deputy Prime Minister and Hull East MP John Prescott has officially opened the city's new look A1033 Hedon Road after a £45m improvement scheme.

Work to upgrade the 7km long road started two years ago in an attempt to ease the growing congestion caused by more than 34,000 vehicles using the route every day.

The finished project has seen Hedon Road upgraded to a dual carriageway with new roundabouts and flyovers and no right turning or traffic signals.

Mr Prescott said the A1033 was a key link for Hull, as a through route for freight, business and tourists travelling to Europe.

"Congestion on Hedon Road has been a source of frustration for many years and the new road will bring real benefits for local residents and businesses by cutting congestion and air pollution," he said.

"People will be able to get to their destinations with minimum delay."

As well as easing congestion, the Highways Agency is hoping the scheme will help reduce air pollution, and improve road safety, access to the port and facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and buses.
