Woman killed in 999 call smash

The Cowley Road was closed both ways on Monday morning
A female pedestrian has died after being hit by a police car answering an emergency call.

It happened shortly after 2330 GMT on Sunday, on the Cowley Road in Oxford.

The two police officers in the car, a man and a woman, tried to help the woman at the scene of the crash.

She was taken to hospital but died shortly after 0300 GMT on Monday.

Thames Valley Police confirmed the incident is being investigated by the Police Complaints Authority.

The woman, in her twenties, is originally from York but lived in Cowley.

Her family have been informed and are travelling down to Oxford.

Cowley Road was closed on Monday morning as traffic investigators examined the scene.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to contact them.
