City thanks 'unsung heroes'
A city was paying tribute to its unsung heroes and heroines on Monday for their "outstanding" voluntary work.

Liverpool City Council is officially thanking them at a special ceremony at the Town Hall.

The 102 volunteers were chosen by the public after the council asked for nominations.

They include Christine Waters, who opened a summer play scheme in Anfield, and 16-year-old Katie-Anne Reeson who was recognised for her seven years working for the Liverpool Talking Newspaper.

'Real difference'

Others receiving awards included Robert McWilliam who has Down's Syndrome and has spent 10 years volunteering for Age Concern.

The awards were due to be presented by council leader Mike Storey and the Lord Mayor Ron Gould.

Mr Storey said: "This event is a fantastic opportunity to thank those who make a real difference to people's lives and their local community.

"Liverpool is full of local heroes and heroines who haven't received the recognition they deserve.

"We want to thank these people for all the work they do and make this an annual event."
