Mothers called by maternity inquiry
Newborn baby
Up to five baby deaths are being investigated
Mothers, their relatives and hospital staff are being urged to come forward with their experiences of a maternity unit which is under investigation after a number of infant deaths.

Health watchdogs said on Friday they want to hear from former patients and anyone who has worked at Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital to help with its inquiry.

Last month the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI) was called in to examine practices at the hospital.

An apology has already been made by the trust involved to one mother whose baby died at the unit earlier this year.

The trust confirmed that another death is the subject of legal proceedings and officials were awaiting a possible claim over a third death.

Two more infant deaths in August are also understood to be due to be examined by the inquiry, requested by the Birmingham and Black Country Strategic Health Authority.

Action plan

CHI said it wants to hear from women, their relatives, former and current members of staff, GPs, patients' representatives and community groups about their experiences of maternity services as New Cross Hospital.

Meetings will be held in Wolverhampton on 8 and 9 December and the investigation team will question staff during a site visit.

An action plan is currently being implemented by the trust to deal with concerns about maternity services.

Anyone wanting to arrange a confidential appointment or telephone interview should call 0845 601 2238.
