A 23-year-old man has appeared in court in connection with the discovery of an alleged pipe bomb factory in east Belfast.

The police have linked the find to the Loyalist Volunteer Force.

Kristopher McCallon, an unemployed man from Glenbrook Avenue in the Bloomfield area, faces four charges.

He is charged with having a sawn-off shotgun with intent to endanger life, having pipe bombs and component parts, possessing cannabis resin and having the drug with intent to supply.

Belfast Magistrate's Court heard on Saturday that he made no reply when charged.

The defendant denied all knowledge of the items found during questioning.

He was remanded in custody to appear before the court again by video-link on 12 December.
