A Mayoress's chain which went missing in Bristol and was then handed in to police had valuable stones missing, it has emerged.

The Lady Mayoress's chain went missing on Wednesday between 1900 and 2030 GMT while the Lord Mayor was at a function in Lawrence Weston.

It was discovered by two Bristol teenagers, Aaron Morris, 15, and Stephen Fry, 13, who will receive £500 each from the city council for handing in the chain.

A spokesperson for the council said: "I saw the chain yesterday but never looked closely.

"There appears to be some damage and we are now sending it back to the jeweller's as soon as possible to have it restored to its former glory."

The Lady Mayoress's chain dates back to 1926. It was made by Alfred Chilcott and Co of Bristol and is insured for £10,000.
