A murder inquiry has begun after a 37-year-old Leeds man was shot dead in the Pudsey area of the city on Thursday evening.
Police say that Mark McCall, a father of three, was "known to them" and was the victim of a targeted attack in the suburb at 1845 GMT.
Detective Superintendent Howard Crowther who is leading the murder inquiry said the gunman shot Mr McCall a number of times after lying in wait for his victim in an alleyway between Westdale Road and Westdale Drive.
Forensic tests and house-to-house inquiries are being carried out.
Police are now appealing for information from the criminal fraternity about the shooting.
Sheila Webb who lives in Westdale Drive told BBC Radio Leeds that she heard a couple of loud bangs on Thursday evening and thought it was children playing with fireworks.
"They were extremely loud, really loud, much louder than they would normally be.
"And then about 20 minutes to half-an-hour later we heard the helicopter outside and saw them with the search lights.
"We realised there were police outside and we realised there had been some sort of incident."
