Former England international Paul Merson has spent a night in police custody after attacking a woman, it has been revealed.
Officers arrested the 35-year-old Walsall striker on Sunday night following an allegation of assault.
He was taken to a police station near to his home in Sutton Coldfield.
The footballer was released with a caution the following day.
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: "A man aged 35 from Sutton Coldfield was arrested on Sunday following an allegation of assault on a woman.
"He remained in custody during the night and was then cautioned and released."
