Blue is the colour

They only sing when they're winning.

An occupational hazard for politicians is an inability to see a bandwagon without jumping aboard, and football offers plenty of opportunity.

The former Tory Cabinet Minister David Mellor, for example, was a supporter of unfashionable Fulham until he discovered the delights of Stamford Bridge and trendy Chelsea.

Mr Mellor's long left Westminster, where, besides fighting for the under-privileged and the oppressed, a group of MPs have tried to set up an all-party group in support of Manchester United.

Apparently, this committee fell foul of the rules on parliamentary groups and managed just one meeting before being relegated.

Peter Hain - whose support for Chelsea has been consistent through good times and bad - confided to MPs that he felt over the moon at the demise of the Parliamentary Reds' branch.

For Mr Hain, blue really is the colour, at least away from Westminster.
