Police have begun a murder inquiry after a man died from a gunshot wound in Merseyside.

Gary Smythe was found in Seacombe View, Wallasey, in the early hours of Monday.

Officers were called to the street at about 0145 GMT, after a resident reported the 30-year-old man had collapsed and died.

An initial medical examination proved inconclusive but a post-mortem examination found he had died from a single small calibre gunshot wound to his stomach.

CCTV recording

Police believe Mr Smythe was probably shot close to where his body was found.

He last seen alive near the Mersey Court Towers at about 2345 GMT on Sunday.

Detectives said Mr Smythe was recorded on CCTV with a man, who they want to trace.

Detective Superintendent Mike Dale, of Merseyside Police, said: "We would urge this man to come forward as he may be a vital witness to what happened to the victim.

"He may well have been the last person to see him on Sunday night."
