U-turn driver killed in crash

A motorist was fatally injured, and two people were seriously hurt, when he tried to carry out a U-turn on a dual carriageway in Essex.

Robert Dearmun, from Chelmsford, died following the accident on the A131 between the Marks Farm and Broad Road roundabouts at Braintree at about 1130 GMT on Wednesday.

Essex Police said the 77-year-old's Fiat Bravo had been stationary in a lay-by before he tried to do a U-turn and collided with a white Peugeot 206 van.

Officers said Mr Dearmun was taken to Chelmsford's Broomfield Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His wife, who was a passenger in the car at the time of the accident, and the driver of the Peugeot, a 55-year-old from Colchester, were treated for shock and minor injuries.
