Iraq

President Bush brought his top man in Baghdad back to Washington to discuss ways to accelerate the transition to democracy in Iraq. There were reports that the administration was deeply frustrated with the work of the Iraqi Governing Council, and was talking about naming an interim Iraqi leader.

Another devastating bomb - this time outside the headquarters of the Italian police in the Iraqi southern city of Nasiriyah - has added to the sense that the coalition needs to find a workable exit strategy.

In the second of his special reports, our diplomatic editor Mark Urban assessed the prospects for democracy in Iraq.
