A former bus driver from Coventry has admitted burying his wife's body in a coal shed after she was killed more than 40 years ago.

John McHugh, 69, appeared at the Old Bailey on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice by getting rid of his wife Bridget's body following her unlawful killing in 1961.

Mr McHugh, of The Bexhill, Stoke Aldermoon, had his case adjourned for sentence on 12 December and he was remanded on unconditional bail.

The body of Mrs McHugh, who was originally from the Glasgow area, was discovered by police in the coal shed of a house in Notting Hill, west London, in February 2002 after a tip-off from a female member of the family.

The woman also implicated two other members of her family in the death at a later inquest.

However Detective Inspector Geoff Baker confirmed that the case would now be closed with no further charges brought.
