Bush's state visit

"This is exactly the right time for him to come" Tony Blair defiantly declared about George W Bush's state visit next week, but there was a nasty row brewing as the Stop the War Coalition was told there will be no protesting in Whitehall during the President's stay.

The pressure group was furious, but they received a boost from Mr Blair's new best friend, the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, who said the President should not be shielded from protesters during his official visit, and helpfully added that there have been no assassinations here for a hundred and ninety years...

Iraq

And to Iraq, the source of all this consternation. What's really going on there at the moment? Our Diplomatic Editor, Mark Urban had a special report on the security situation in Falluja, after spending days with the 82nd Airborne, and British troops in Iraq.

Rural problems

Lord Haskins' two year study of rural problems was released, and the central message seemed to be that Whitehall must let go, to trust local people to decide what's best for them. But will they do it? We reported from south Devon on the problems being faced there, and spoke to the Environment secretary, Margaret Beckett.
