Rooftop stand-off ends peacefully
Police cordoned off surrounding streets to protect the public
A teenager who sparked a seven-hour stand-off with police by climbing onto a roof has given himself up.

The 19-year-old man took to the roof of the terraced house in Ronald Road, Darnal, Sheffield, after two police officers arrived to serve an arrest warrant at 1000 GMT on Tuesday.

He is alleged to have thrown roof tiles and chimney pots to the ground, damaging a number of cars, including one police vehicle.

Police sealed off Ronald Road and surrounding streets to protect the public and residents trying to reach their homes were turned back.

Police negotiators kept in contact with the man in an attempt to coax him down from the building.

A police spokesman said: "It all came to a peaceful end at 1715 GMT when he surrendered to police custody."

The man was taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital for medical checks.

He was due to be questioned later by police about criminal damage and public order offences.
