Many roads across the province are closed

Motorists have been urged to take extra care on Northern Ireland's roads after heavy rainfall caused severe flooding.

The warning was issued by the police on Saturday.

A number of areas in Belfast were affected including Ladas Drive, Upper Knockbreda Road, Grand Parade, Ballyhackamore and the area around the Metropolitan Tabernacle on the Shore Road.

Motorists were asked to avoid a number of roads in the the Randalstown area of County Antrim.

These included the Portglenone Road, Branch Road, Ahoghill Road, and Craigmore Road which were all flooded.

The Dunadry Road at Muckamore near Antrim was also closed.

Football postponed

The Belfast to Bangor Road was badly affected at Holywood in County Down.

The heavy rain also forced the postponement of all eight of Saturday's Irish League Premier Division matches.

Norse Merchant Ferries said the weather conditions meant a three hour delay in a sailing on Saturday night between Belfast and Liverpool.

The 2230 GMT boat was not scheduled to leave until 0130 GMT on Sunday.
