Church sex attack man jailed
A man who carried out a sex attack on a woman outside a church has been sent to jail for five-and-a-half years.

Joseph Craig, 26, was told by the judge that his crime had been "heinous" and the public had to be protected.

Craig admitted attempting to rape the 20-year-old waitress who had gone to the church to pray for her grandfather whose funeral was being held in Canada.

Craig, of Bell Street, Glasgow, was caught after police matched a blood test from him to DNA samples.

He was originally charged with rape but his plea of not guilty was accepted by the Crown at the High Court in Glasgow on 3 October.

Lord Brodie said: "I regard what you made your victim submit to as very serious indeed and not significantly less than rape."

Reports had shown that Craig was clearly a "serious risk to the public" and the judge ordered that he remain on licence for three years after his release.
