A giant in the world of hot-air ballooning has been grounded after its main sponsor pulled out.

Cadbury Trebor Bassett has decided to stop flying the Bertie Bassett balloon because it does not fit in with its marketing strategy.

Thousands of people across the country have seen the special shape balloon as it sails over their homes, taking part in balloon fiestas.

A spokesman for Cadbury Trebor Bassett confirmed that its long association with hot air balloons was coming to an end, but Bertie that may fly again on the odd occasion.

"After seven years its finally time to au revoir to the Bertie Bassett Balloon," he said.

"We've had a wonderful association with the team but it does not currently fit with our marketing strategy, which is why we are looking to plough our funds into other areas."

The balloon has been operated by Bristol-based Phoenix Balloons for seven years.

"Everyone is astonished, there are so few special shape balloons now and Bertie was one of the favourites," said Pete Dalby from the company.

It seems a shame not to use this great resource because the public love it so much and it is such a tremendous crowd puller

The 155-feet-tall candy man regularly appears at Bristol International Balloon Fiesta.

"We always do market research after an event to find out what people thought, Bertie was always one of the most popular balloons," said Susan Tanner, event director.

Two special shapes and one traditional teardrop Bertie Bassett balloon have been built by Bristol-based Cameron Balloons.

"It seems a shame not to use this great resource because the public love it so much and it is such a tremendous crowd puller," said Hannah Cameron from the firm.

"I think without any exaggeration it is the favourite balloon on the balloon circuit and among the public."
