Council battles traffic menace
Car pollution
The working party will report back to the council next year
Councillors are to investigate long-term solutions for growing traffic problems on the main route into a busy seaside town.

A working party will review "traffic management, potential growth and future safety issues" in Weston-super-Mare.

Among the options being examined are ways of encouraging retailers to provide free or subsidised transport and delivery services to reduce the number of cars.

Councillor Elfan Ap Rees said: "If the town is to develop its economic, business and tourism opportunities we have to get stuck in and look at a long-term fix for the growing traffic problems on this main artery.

"The feeling is that short-term piecemeal improvements are not the answer, as the retail outlets in this area continue to grow, with their customers often causing bottlenecks for traffic trying to go elsewhere in the town."

The working party is expected to report back early in the new year.
