Concert stopped after floor shakes
Leeds Town Hall
Leeds Town Hall is a regular venue for music events
A concert by rock band Black Rebel Motorcycle Club was stopped when officials at Leeds Town Hall feared the floor might collapse.

More than 900 fans were jumping up and down while the San Francisco band performed its set in the main hall of the famous Victorian building on Wednesday evening.

The floor's movement is monitored and when officials became concerned at what they saw they sounded the fire alarm.

An announcement was made from the stage asking the fans to leave the building.

Floor movement

A spokeswoman for Leeds City Council apologised for cutting the concert short.

"We have special equipment under the floor of the Town Hall which measures the amount of movement during a concert," she said.

"During the second half we became concerned about how the floor was moving and reluctantly took the decision to stop the concert.

"Obviously we are sorry that people missed part of the show but safety is the most important consideration for us. "

Tests were due to be carried out on Thursday to see if the floor has been damaged.

Leeds Town Hall, which was opened by Queen Victoria in 1858, is due to be closed for part of next year for renovation.
