Swimmer's death investigated
The death of a man who got into difficulties while swimming off Lundy Island is being treated as suspicious by police.

The 45-year-old Italian was seen face down in the water at about 1600 GMT on Wednesday and picked up by a military helicopter from Chivenor, north Devon.

The man had gone for a swim from his canoe off Lundy Island, 12 miles from the north Devon coast.

His clothes were found in the canoe following the incident, said coastguards.

He was taken to North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokeswoman said that the death was being treated as suspicious pending the results of a post-mortem examination.

The man's identity has not yet been released.
