The High Court in the Indian city of Bombay (Mumbai) has ordered charges to be brought against the former police chief, RS Sharma, in an alleged multi-million dollar fake stamp scandal.

Prosecutors believe a racket was being organised involving the printing and selling of fake government stamp paper, used to produce counterfeit stamps which could then be sold.

Sitting on Thursday, the court also asked the Bombay special investigation team to continue its inquiries, rejecting a government demand that the federal organisation, the Central Bureau of Investigation, should take over.

Nearly 60 people, including 15 policemen, have been arrested for their alleged involvement.
