Zambian election gift backfires

A traditional chief in Zambia has said he will not forgive the ruling party for offering him a torn blanket during a recent by-election campaign.

Chief Chibwika told The Post newspaper that he had gone to the capital Lusaka to show others the disrespectful present and possibly return it.

It is commonplace for African chiefs to instruct their communities how to vote.

The ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy won the by-election despite losing in Chief Chibwika's district.

"For me, I am very annoyed. I have not forgiven them," the chief said.

He said it was unheard of for young people to make defective offerings to their chiefs.

He said the vice-president had apologised over the issue.
