Climber braves another peak
Nigel Vardy
Mr Vardy was badly frost bitten in Alaska
A Derbyshire mountaineer is planning to return to sub-zero temperatures despite a previous near-death experience with frost bite.

Nigel Vardy, from Belper, wants to reach the summit of Gunnbjorns Fjeld in Greenland.

At 3,693m (12,120 feet), it is one of the highest mountains in the Arctic Circle.

He says the fear of frost injuries does not put him off, despite suffering on previous climbs.

Mr Vardy lost several toes and part of his nose to frostbite when climbing Mount McKinley in Alaska in 1999.

"(The climb) puts me back into the climate that I was in when I suffered severe frost bite.

"But now I climb with a lot more support and logistics."

"Ten thousand feet in the Arctic is obviously very cold, so in that respect it is a great challenge to take on."

He will attempt to tackle the Greenland mountain in May.
