A Cheshire man has been arrested by Spanish police on suspicion of smuggling heroin into the UK.

Anthony Murray, 49, of Wilmslow, was arrested on Tuesday in Benalmadena, near Malaga.

Officers from the UK's National Crime Squad had issued a warrant for his arrest after heroin with an estimated value of £1m was recovered in Liverpool in 2002.

Mr Murray, who used to live in Dean Road, Handforth, was in Spanish custody on Thursday.

Detective Inspector John Francis, of the National Crime Squad, said: "The National Crime Squad never gives up.

"We waited patiently, gathered intelligence and worked closely with the Spanish authorities.

"We will now be liaising with them to begin the extradition procedures."
