Two Torquay telephone kiosks have been destroyed in firework attacks.

The door and roof of the first phone box in Barton Road was blown off at about 2115 GMT on Tuesday and glass thrown 50 foot.

The vandals then attacked a telephone kiosk at Meadfoot Beach.

Sergeant Alan Mobbs of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "It was potentially a very serious incident indeed.

"No-one was injured but if anyone had been walking past it they could have suffered very serious injuries."

Ripped apart

Police are appealing for witnesses amid concern that other phone boxes could be targeted on Wednesday, Guy Fawkes night.

The attack follows a number of similar incidents in England as the government plans to ban the most powerful fireworks.

Last month a phone box in Torpoint in Cornwall was blown up in a firework attack.

In Barnsley, south Yorkshire, a phone box was ripped apart by a powerful firework on 4 October.

In Liverpool a police officer needed hospital treatment for the effects of smoke inhalation after a firework was thrown into the station.

And in September, at least 10 people were injured following a series of firework attacks in London.
