Many jobs at Rolls-Royce in Derby have been secured after the company signed a deal with the Ministry of Defence.
Two business groups are bidding to supply aircraft for the RAF and the Royal Navy, but no matter who wins, Rolls-Royce will do the maintenance.
It is a multi-billion pound contract expected to provide work for the company over the next 27 years.
John Boughton, the director of Marketing and Sales for Rolls-Royce Defence, said it was an extremely "significant" order.
He said: "If we can add some exports to it, obviously it will be of tremendous value to the company."
